Visby is a fantastic Medieval site, listed as UNESCO World Heritage with Northern Europe´s most well preserved city wall
We had a very nice family from Mexico visiting us at The Medieval Hotel during October last year. They were so enthusiastic about Gotland and believed the whole time that they were on an island in the outer archipelago of Stockholm. Well, what do you say… Just pray a native Gotlander never hear it as they would be very upset.
Traveling to Gotland only takes 3 hrs with high speed ferry, or if you prefer flying, the ride will take between 35 and 45 minutes. It is a short distance, yet far – as Gotland often is related to as “It feels like abroad, yet in Sweden”. Gotland is the largest island in Sweden (and in the Baltic Sea), 170 km long and 60 km wide. Just don´t think you can explore the whole island in one day.
Visby is a fantastic Medieval site, listed as UNESCO World Heritage with Northern Europe´s most well preserved city wall. Stroll in narrow alleys, stop for a cup in a nice café, visit an exhibition, or do some good shopping in any of Visby´s wealth of small stores.
Using Visby as base camp, you can also perform day expeditions by car, exploring the nice country side – or just remain in this enchanted town and experience its surroundings by walking or biking. You may even find a spot for sun bathing during summer.
The climate on Gotland is equivalent to southern Sweden, climate zone 1. Often spring may be a bit colder, yet summer and autumn remains longer and Gotland has most sun hours in the whole of Sweden! Dressing right would be being prepared for cold days and very warm ones. Wind breakers are always good travel companions aswell as good hiking shoes. And if you want to dress up for dinner, no restaurants have dress code, however you might feel comfortable dressing up anyway!
And don´t forget your swim suite despite season – The Medieval Hotel has our own warm spring.
Gotland has three visiting seasons; Spring and autumn – which offers most of what you can read by following the link to Leisure Facts; Summer with sunbathing and swimming, temperatures around 20-32 C, (68-90 F) and a lot of holiday spenders from the Swedish mainland; Winter, when the colour of grey shows its many shades, calm and quietly in harmony with the sea.
We provide you with suggestions and excursions in ”Leisure facts”.
