Gotland is an enchanted place. You make new discoveries all the time, even the inhabitants gets surprised of the wealth of scenic hot spots to be found.
Your first step into a successful explore of the island is to plan some geographical selections.
Visby is an experience of its own. Northern Gotland and the famous director Ingmar Bergman´s Faro (Fårö) is another one. The southern part of Gotland, and the west coast is one separate journey and finally the east coast is another.
In the countryside in general there are some more or less casual bars or restaurants opened, definitely during the summer season, but always check out opening hours.
Visit small farm dairies, Medieval churches (there are 92 of them, still providing services), Gotlandic meadows, small lunch places, artists, craftsmen, become hypnotized by the sea, pick rocks or wreck wood on a beach, play golf, go horseback riding. There is something for everyone on Gotland. You are just supposed to know about it.

Northern Gotland is characterized by low pine trees, flat rocked moss grown limestone, what is called “allvar” in Swedish. A more barren landscape than you find in the south. Actually even the climate differs a little, spring is said to reach Faro (Fårö) a fortnight later than the main island. To cross to Faro you use a state operated smaller car ferry (also for pedestrians or bikers) that departures every whole and half hour from Farosund (Fårösund), which means “the straights of Faro. The crossing takes exactly 7 minutes and is free of charge. Mind you – during summer the lines can be very long so be eather early or late. The population on the island of Faro is about 600.
East and south east parts of Gotland are more rocky and forest covered. This is also where the threes changes from pine into a more leafy fauna. Ostergarn (Östergarn) and south to the little village of Ljugarn is charming, this settlement shows architecture influenced from the 19th century with porches and exteriors in decorated wood works, this is very unusual on Gotland where you mostly find plastered stone facades with no wind protectors.
The southernmost point of Gotland is called Sudret or Storsudret, it is a dialectal variation of the Swedish name for south. Her you can explore small gracing lots and round stone walls, windings small roads with a vault of leafy trees during the warm season.
The church tower of one of the most southern medieval churches, Oja, is namned Gra Gasi, meaning the grey goose, and has an impressive height of 67 meters. Inside you may see amazing wall pictures and wooden statues (both original and replicas) dating around 1250.
